Rudolf Vejrych, 1882-1939
Nude with a bouquet, 1934

Oil on canvas

In his early artistic period, Rudolf Vejrych showed a strong interest in French Impressionism, whose manifestations he became acquainted with during his stay in Paris in 1907. However, the turning point for him was the 1930s, when, following the example of the painter Henri Matisse, he began to focus on colour as a defining means of expression in his artistic delivery. The painting Nude with Bouquet is specifically from this “colourful” period. Here, the painter depicts a young nude woman with auburn hair posing on a floral-patterned armchair. The colour range of the composition makes full use of impressive complementary shades of red and green. The beauty and freedom embodied in the figure of the girl creates a joyful symbiosis with other depictions of symbols of life – gladiolus flowers, asters and yellow apples.
