Paris with Eiffel Tower, 1934

Oil on canvas

František Tichý is one of the important authors who shaped the Czech Avant-Garde of the 1920s and 30s. He was commissioned to paint the canvas Paris with Eiffel Tower by the then management of the Litomyšl art gallery headed by the teacher Václav Drbohlav, who bought it from the artist for one thousand Crowns. The picture was created in Paris, where the artist worked between 1931 and 1935. His best work comes from his Parisian period, during which, in addition to painting the suburbs, Tichý devoted himself extensively to subjects such as circuses and bullfights. From an artistic point of view, Paris with Eiffel Tower is an example of the painter’s sensual treatment of colour and fine line, which strengthens the drawing character of the work. In professional literature, the painting is also referred to as Paris Roofs.
