Jan Slavicek, 1900-1970
Still Life with Napkin, 20. 20s. century

Oil on canvas

Jan Slavíček, a prominent Czech painter and member of the Slavíček family of artists, was known for his realistic depictions of landscapes, still life paintings and views of Prague. The exhibited painting Still Life with Napkin is a significant example of the author’s painting talent and feeling for building a picture well balanced in terms of colour and composition. Moreover, it clearly shows how the artist was inspired by modernist painting, specifically by Fauvism. The field of the painting is built up without modelling and shading, and the impression of power is a result of the coloured surfaces that have an immediate effect on the viewer.
